Genetics: Analysis and Principles is a one-semester, introductory
genetics textbook that takes an experimental approach to
understanding genetics. By weaving one or two experiments into the
narrative of each chapter, students can simultaneously explore the
scientific method and understand the genetic principles that have
been learned from these experiments. The pedagogy of Genetics:
Analysis & Principles has been designed to foster student
learning. Instead of being a collection of facts and figures, this
text is intended to be an engaging and motivating textbook in which
formative assessment allows students to move ahead and learn the
material in a productive way.
Saunders and Cornett's Financial Institutions Management: A Risk
Management Approach provides an innovative approach that focuses on
managing return and risk in modern financial institutions. The
central theme is that the risks faced by financial institutions
managers and the methods and markets through which these risks are
managed are becoming increasingly similar whether an institution is
chartered as a commercial bank, a savings bank, an investment bank,
or an insurance company. Although the traditional nature of each
sector's product activity is analyzed, a greater emphasis is placed
on new areas of activities such as asset securitization,
off-balance-sheet banking, and international banking.
In a provocative and engaging style, Philosophy: A Historical
Survey with Essential Readings consists of two main parts: the
chapters, which study the primary contributions of Western
civilization's most influential philosophers, and the anthology of
chronologically-organized classic readings from Western philosophy.
The first half of this book presents a sustained narrative of the
great philosophers of Western civilization, from ancient Greece
until today. In the second half, the authors offer a snapshot of
the most famous discussions by many of the philosophers studied in
the first half. These readings parallel the order presented in the
first half of the book. Philosophy: A Historical Survey with
Essential Readings also can be customized (as a print or ebook) to
include selections from Discourses, McGraw Hill's collection of
more than 450 classical and contemporary philosophy readings.
- Thomas and Maurice's goal for Managerial Economics is to teach
students the economic way of thinking about business decisions and
strategy. The 13e continues to develop critical thinking skills and
provides students with a logical way of analyzing both the routine
decisions of managing daily business operations as well as the
longer-run strategic plans that seek to manipulate the actions and
reactions of rival firms. - Managerial Economics is a
self-contained textbook that requires no previous training in
economics. While maintaining a rigorous style, this book is
designed to be one of the most accessible books in managerial
economics from which to teach and learn because of its clarity of
presentation and strong end of chapter problems. Rather than
parading students quickly through every interesting or new topic in
microeconomics and industrial organization, this 13th edition
instead carefully develops and applies the most useful concepts for
business decision making and strategic planning.
Environmental Geology, 5e focuses on the fascinating interaction
between humans and the geologic processes that shape the Earth's
environment. This text emphasizes how human survival is highly
dependent on the natural environment and students should find the
topics to be quite relevant to their own lives and, therefore, more
interesting.

his research from a decision-making point of view in terms of
decisions marketers make either at the market, brand, firm, store,
or the customer level; Kotler describes how he entered the
marketing field and shows his contributions in four sections:
articles written, books published, students nurtured, and
executives consulted and trained; Sheth, described as an accidental
marketerA", traces the interesting path he followed as the social
scientist interested in buyer behavior who ventured into
organizational buyer behaviour; Wind shows how his research has
been influenced by the real world challenges facing corporations
and organizations, and talks of his search for and use of the
latest methodological developments to assure the rigor and validity
of the solutions.

This book reviews the practice of reclaiming treated municipal
wastewater for agricultural irrigation and using sewage sludge as a
soil amendment and fertilizer in the United States. It describes
and evaluates treatment technologies and practices; effects on
soils, crop production, and ground water; public health concerns
from pathogens and toxic chemicals; existing regulations and
guidelines; and some of the economic, liability, and institutional
issues. The recommendations and findings are aimed at authorities
at the federal, state, and local levels, public utilities, and the
food processing industry.
The most comprehensive textbook available on therapeutic modalities
in rehabilitation—enhanced by a full-color presentation and
numerous case studies This practically oriented guide presents the
basic science and current best available evidence for each type of
therapeutic modality used in physical rehabilitation. Here,
clinicians will find the information needed to determine which
modality will be most effective in a given situation to achieve
optimal patient outcomes. Each chapter examines the physiologic
basis for use, clinical applications, specific techniques of
application through the use of related laboratory activities, and
relevant individual case studies for each therapeutic modality.
Therapeutic Modalities in Rehabilitation, Sixth Edition is divided
into six parts: Part 1:Â Foundations of Therapeutic
Modalities examines the scientific basis for using therapeutic
modalities, classifies the modalities according to the type of
energy each uses, and includes guidelines for selecting the most
appropriate modalities for managing pain and for use in different
phases of the healing process. Part II: Electrical Energy
Modalities discusses the principles of electricity, components of
electrical and electrotherapeutic currents, treatment parameters,
physiological responses to electrical current, iontophoresis, and
biofeedback. Part III: Thermal Energy Modalities focuses on
modalities which produce a change in tissue temperatures through
conduction and convection including thermotherapy and cryotherapy.
Part IV: Sound Energy Modalities covers modalities that utilize
acoustic energy to produce a therapeutic effect, including
therapeutic ultrasound and extracorporeal shockwave therapy.
Biologic effects and clinical applications are also discussed. Part
V: Electromagnetic Energy Modalities examines diathermy, as well as
photobiomodulation (light therapy) treatment techniques and
protocols. Part VI: Mechanical Energy Modalities includes chapters
on traction, intermittent pneumatic compression, therapeutic
massage and vibration. Presented in full color, the text is
enhanced by valuable learning aids, including chapter objectives
and summaries, figures and tables, clinical decision-making
exercises, review questions, instructional videos, a glossary of
key terms in each chapter, up-to-date references, case studies, lab
activities, and appendices.
During the 1950s, with the Cold War looming, military planners
sought to know more about how to keep fighting forces fit and
capable in the harsh Alaskan environment. In 1956 and 1957, the
U.S. Air Force's former Arctic Aeromedical Laboratory conducted a
study of the role of the thyroid in human acclimatization to cold.
To measure thyroid function under various conditions, the
researchers administered a radioactive medical trace, Iodine-131,
to Alaska Natives and white military personnel; based on the study
results, the researchers determined that the thyroid did not play a
significant role in human acclimatization to cold. When this study
of thyroid function was revisited at a 1993 conference on the Cold
War legacy in the Arctic, serious questions were raised about the
appropriateness of the activity?whether it posed risks to the
people involved and whether the research had been conducted within
the bounds of accepted guidelines for research using human
participants. In particular, there was concern over the relatively
large proportion of Alaska Natives used as subjects and whether
they understood the nature of the study. This book evaluates the
research in detail, looking at both the possible health effects of
Iodine-131 administration in humans and the ethics of human
subjects research. This book presents conclusions and
recommendations and is a significant addition to the nation's
current reevaluation of human radiation experiments conducted
during the Cold War. Table of Contents Front Matter Executive

A respected resource for decades, the Guide for the Care and Use of
Laboratory Animals has been updated by a committee of experts,
taking into consideration input from the scientific and laboratory
animal communities and the public at large. The Guide incorporates
new scientific information on common laboratory animals, including
aquatic species, and includes extensive references. It is organized
around major components of animal use: *Key concepts of animal care
and use. The Guide sets the framework for the humane care and use
of laboratory animals. *Animal care and use program. The Guide
discusses the concept of a broad Program of Animal Care and Use,
including roles and responsibilities of the Institutional Official,
Attending Veterinarian and the Institutional Animal Care and Use
Committee. *Animal environment, husbandry, and management. A
chapter on this topic is now divided into sections on terrestrial
and aquatic animals and provides recommendations for housing and
environment, husbandry, behavioral and population management, and
more. *Veterinary care. The Guide discusses veterinary care and the
responsibilities of the Attending Veterinarian. It includes
recommendations on animal procurement and transportation,
preventive medicine (including animal biosecurity), and clinical
care and management. The Guide addresses distress and pain
recognition and relief, and issues surrounding euthanasia.
*Physical plant. The Guide identifies design issues, providing
construction guidelines for functional areas; considerations such
as drainage, vibration and noise control, and environmental
monitoring; and specialized facilities for animal housing and
research needs. The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory
Animals provides a framework for the judgments required in the
management of animal facilities. This updated and expanded resource
of proven value will be important to scientists and researchers,
veterinarians, animal care personnel, facilities managers,
institutional administrators, policy makers involved in research
issues, and animal welfare advocates.
Combat helmets have evolved considerably over the years from those
used in World War I to today's Advanced Combat Helmet. One of the
key advances was the development of aramid fibers in the 1960s,
which led to today's Kevlar-based helmets. The Department of
Defense is continuing to invest in research to improve helmet
performance, through better design and materials as well as better
manufacturing processes. Review of the Department of Defense Test
Protocols for Combat Helmets considers the technical issues
relating to test protocols for military combat helmets. At the
request of the DOD Director of Operational Test and Evaluation,
this report evaluates the adequacy of the Advanced Combat Helmet
test protocol for both first article testing and lot acceptance
testing, including its use of the metrics of probability of no
penetration and the upper tolerance limit (used to evaluate
backface deformation). The report evaluates appropriate use of
statistical techniques in gathering data; adequacy of current
helmet testing procedures; procedures for the conduct of additional
analysis of penetration and backface deformation data; and scope of
characterization testing relative to the benefit of the information
obtained.
